While we're speaking English (and since @Fluttershy just did it) I've been wondering - what does it mean to add "rein" to a verb? I know it as an adverb or adjective to mean pure, clean, perfect, etc. but I don't quite get the meaning as a prefix.

It can also mean "come in", if you say "komm rein". "Reinschleichen" for example means to sneak somewhere in.

Well, a lot of native speakers couldn't actually name all of those tenses, but they still (for the most part) know how to use them. XD

From the context in @Fluttershy's post, it seems like it's being used idiomatically. Hmmmm... maybe something more like "to check up on" or "to check in on" - since "to look in" would only be used to talk about looking inside of a physical object, building, or room in English. Does that sound right to you?

It can be used idiomatically, yes. For example "Ich kann doch nicht in deinen Kopf reingucken" means "I cannot look into your head".
