MICHAEL Jackson was probably addicted to a painkiller given by a dermatologist treating the star with botox in the months before his death, a medical expert has testified.

One of the symptoms of withdrawing from the painkiller, Demerol, was insomnia - the problem Jackson was being treated for when he died in 2009, the expert said at the manslaughter trial of the star's doctor, Conrad Murray, today.

"My opinion is that ... he was probably addicted to opioids," addiction specialist Robert Waldman said, adding that his assessment was based on medical records and other evidence presented about Jackson.

He was called to testify by Murray's lawyers, who presented medical records subpoenaed from the office of Arnold Klein, a Beverly Hills dermatologist who Jackson saw several times a week before his June 2009 death.

The records showed Jackson being treated with increasing doses of Demerol at sessions from April to June that year, to ease pain when he was being given Botox and other similar wrinkle-busting injections.

Murray's defence lawyers presented Waldman to the court in a bid to counter evidence implicating the doctor over Jackson's death from an overdose of the powerful sedative propofol.

The addiction specialist stressed the difference between drug addiction and dependency - addiction is a repetitive behaviour, while dependency is a physical need for a substance.

Cross-examined by prosecutor David Walgren, Waldman said that, based purely on the records from Klein's office, he would "probably not" diagnose Jackson with addiction, only dependency.

But he said the records combined with other evidence that has emerged during the trial, and public knowledge about Jackson, would lead him to believe that Jackson was probably an addict.

Murray's lawyers have tried during the trial - which could end within days - to suggest that Jackson was a desperate drug addict who could have killed himself by self-administering an overdose on the day of his death.

Prosecutors say he is guilty of involuntary manslaughter by giving Jackson a cocktail of sedatives, including propofol, to try to get him to sleep, and then abandoning the singer at the crucial moment, returning to find him lifeless.

Murray faces up to four years in jail if found guilty by the seven-man, five-woman jury.

Jackson 'possibly' addicted to Botox painkillers

Updated October 28, 2011 09:37:03

Michael Jackson was getting large regular shots of the painkiller Demerol, along with Botox treatments, in the months before his death, a Los Angeles court has heard.

But in the involuntary manslaughter trial of Jackson's former physician Conrad Murray, addiction specialist Dr Robert Waldman could not say unequivocally whether he believed the singer was addicted to the painkiller.

Dr Waldman was testifying as an expert witness for the defence.

The claim by Murray's attorneys is that Jackson was addicted to various drugs and that he engaged in "doctor shopping".

Murray has admitted to giving Jackson nearly daily doses of the powerful anaesthetic propofol as a sleep aid at the singer's rented Los Angeles mansion, and medical examiners found that was the chief cause of his June 25, 2009 death.

But Murray's attorneys say that the physician was unaware Jackson was getting shots of Demerol from a Beverly Hills dermatologist, and that it hampered Murray's efforts to get the singer to sleep.

Dr Waldman confirmed side effects of Demerol withdrawal include anxiety and insomnia.

According to medical records presented to the court, Jackson received 900 milligrams of Demerol over three days in May 2009, from dermatologist Dr Arnold Klein.

Dr Klein's records show he also gave Jackson Botox and Restylane for wrinkles and excess perspiration for several months in 2009.

Dr Waldman described the Demerol shots as "stiff doses" that were not needed with skin treatment injections.

"I believe there is evidence that he was dependent on Demerol," Dr Waldman said of Jackson, adding that the singer was "possibly" addicted to the painkiller.

But during an aggressive cross-examination by prosecutors, Dr Waldman could not say for certain that Jackson was addicted to the drug.

He also acknowledged he was not officially certified as an addiction specialist.

Dependence is characterised by a physical need for a drug, while addiction is more serious because it also involves a person continuing with destructive behaviour and use of a substance despite bad consequences, Dr Waldman told the court.

Murray's attorneys argue that on the day Jackson died, he gave himself an extra, fatal dose of propofol.

Murray, who has pleaded not guilty, faces up to four years in prison if convicted.

Jackson doctor's lawyers try to shift blame

Singer's longtime dermatologist keeps being mentioned, but can't be called to testify

Dr. Conrad Murray listens to character witness testimony during his involuntary manslaughter trial in Los Angeles on Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2011.

LOS ANGELES — Lawyers for Michael Jackson's doctor sought to shift blame Thursday to another doctor and a drug different from the anesthetic that killed the star, calling an expert to testify that Jackson was addicted to Demerol in the months before his death.

They suggested the singer's withdrawal from the painkiller triggered the insomnia that Dr. Conrad Murray was trying to resolve when he gave Jackson the anesthetic propofol.

Murray's attorneys claim Jackson self-administered a fatal dose of propofol as a sleep aid.

Authorities contend Murray delivered the lethal dose and botched resuscitation efforts. Murray has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter in Jackson's 2009 death.

There was no mention of propofol during the testimony of Dr. Robert Waldman, an addiction expert who said he studied the records of Dr. Arnold Klein, Jackson's longtime dermatologist, in concluding the star developed a dependency on the powerful painkiller. Records showed Klein used Demerol on Jackson repeatedly for procedures to enhance his appearance.

No Demerol was discovered in the singer's system when he died, but propofol was found throughout his body.

Waldman relied on Klein's records from March 2009 until days before Jackson died.

Under questioning by Murray's lead lawyer, Ed Chernoff, Waldman said: "I believe there is evidence that he (Jackson) was dependent on Demerol, possibly."

Klein has emerged as the missing link in the trial, with the defense raising his name at every turn and the judge ruling he may not be called as a witness because his care of Jackson is not at issue. He has not been charged with any wrongdoing.

But Klein's handwritten notes on his visits with Jackson were introduced through Waldman, who said Klein was giving Jackson unusually high doses of Demerol for four months — from March through June 2009 — with the last shots coming three days before the singer's death.

Over three days in April, the records showed Jackson received 775 milligrams of Demerol along with small doses of the sedative Versed. Waldman's testimony showed Klein, who also was Jackson's longtime friend, was giving the singer huge doses of the powerful Demerol at the same time Murray was giving Jackson the anesthetic propofol to sleep.

"This is a large dose for an opioid for a dermatology procedure in an office," Waldman said.

He told jurors the escalating doses showed Jackson had developed a tolerance to the drug and was probably addicted. He said a withdrawal symptom from the drug is insomnia.

On cross-examination, prosecutor David Walgren tangled with the expert, who was hostile to most of his questions. He elicited from Waldman that the law requires physicians to keep accurate and detailed records, which Murray did not. The doctor also said all drugs should be kept in a locked cabinet or safe where they could not be stolen or diverted by anyone.

Waldman said every doctor also must document when the drugs are stored and when they are used. Murray told police he kept no records on his treatment of Jackson.

Story: Patients' praise makes Jackson's doctor cry

Several prosecution experts have said the propofol self-administration defense was improbable, and a key expert said he ruled it out completely, arguing the more likely scenario was that Murray gave Jackson a much higher dose than he has acknowledged.

Jackson had complained of insomnia as he prepared for a series of comeback concerts and was receiving the anesthetic and sedatives from Murray to help him sleep.

Murray's police interview indicates he didn't know Jackson was being treated by Klein and was receiving other drugs.

In response to questions from a prosecutor, Waldman said some of the symptoms of Demerol withdrawal were the same as those seen in patients withdrawing from the sedatives lorazepam and diazepam. Murray had been giving Jackson both drugs.

The final defense witness was to be Dr. Paul White, a propofol expert.

White and Waldman do not necessarily have to convince jurors that Jackson gave himself the fatal dose, but merely provide them with enough reasonable doubt about the prosecution's case against Murray.

Michael Jackson Got Botox Injections in Armpits and Groin

Michael Jackson got regular injections of Botox and Restylane, drugs meant to smooth wrinkles and to curb his "excessive perspiration," according to testimony today in his doctor's manslaughter trial.

The four-week-long trial of Dr. Conrad Murray has shed as much light on Jackson's odd and often secretive life as it did on his death.

The newest revelation came today when a review of all the different drugs that were injected into Jackson included Botox and Restylane.

The Botox, injected into his armpits and groin, was intended to control the singer's "excessive perspiration," according to medical documents introduced in court today. The injections were carried out by Jackson's Beverly Hills dermatologist, Arnold Klein.

Klein also injected the king of pop with Restylane, an "injectable filler for wrinkles," said Robert Waldman, an addiction specialist who testified for the defense.

The injections were introduced to determine whether they were painful and would have contributed to Jackson's need for pain killers. Waldman said, however, that the injections did not involve significant pain.

After Waldman, the defense's final witness, Dr. Paul White, an anesthesiologist whose studies popularized the use of propofol in the operating room, took the stand. White likely will complete his testimony on Friday.

Early into his testimony, White denounced the prosecution's premise that Murray administered a fatal dose of propofol to Jackson on the morning of his death.

"I read all these documents and was perplexed that the determination had been made that Dr. Murray was infusing propofol, because in my examination of the documents and evidence, it wasn't obvious to me to me," White said.

White said he would not have expected Jackson to die from the drugs Murray admitted giving him.

White conceded that, either way, Murray should not have left the room with Jackson under the influence of propofol.

The defense hopes White, their star witness, will be able to at least put reasonable doubt in the minds of jurors as to whether Murray is responsible for Jackson's death.

Details Emerge About Michael Jackson's Life

In the last days of the trial, Jackson was heard complaining about his wandering life that had taken him from his Neverland Ranch in California to Bahrain, France and back to a series of homes in California.

He told Brandon "Randy" Phillips, CEO of AEG Live and the promoter for Jackson's "This Is It" tour, that he was tired of making his three children live like "vagabonds," according to Phillips' earlier testimony.

Jackson, who was preparing for a 31-show concert tour, was approached by Phillips about extending the tour to 50 shows, Phillips told the jury.

The Kng of Pop replied that he would consider the expanded schedule under a couple of conditions. One of those conditions was that he be provided with an estate outside of London with 16-plus acres, running streams and horses, Phillips said.

"The primary reason was that he wanted to finally settle down and get a really, really good home for the kids so they weren't living like vagabonds. He was tired of living like that," Phillips said.

One thing that didn't change about the flamboyant Jackson was his desire to be recognized. His other condition was to have the Guinness Book of Records be present at his 50th concert, "because he knew this was a feat that no performer would ever be able to beat," the AEG executive said.

Earlier in the trial, other revelations emerged ranging from how Jackson slept with a urinary catheter each night to his use of oxygen tanks, skin-bleaching creams, his use of aliases and his refusal to use telephones.

It remains to be seen, however, whether the defense testimony shored up Murray's claim that Jackson was responsible for his own death by allegedly giving himself a dose of the powerful anesthetic propofol while Murray was out of the room on June 25, 2009.

"The defense is in a tough spot," said ABC News legal analyst Dan Abrams. "When all you have to do is hope that at least one juror thinks that there's reasonable doubt, the defense still has hope -- at least on cause of death, rather than negligence."

Earlier in the week, Murray's legal team brought in a series of witnesses who testified how Jackson would beg them to provide him with propofol, the only drug that he said would allow him to sleep.

But prosecution asked each of those doctors and nurses whether they agreed to provide Jackson with the drug, and each said they had refused. That left Murray as the only physician who agreed to administer propofol to Jackson.

"He kept telling me that doctors said he'd be safe [taking the propofol]," said Cherilyn Lee, a nurse practitioner who consulted Jackson on holistic health care. "I said, 'No one who cares about your will give you propofol to sleep.'"

Abrams said those witness statements are damaging to the defense.

"Their witnesses, who claim that Michael Jackson was effectively shopping around for a doctor or nurse who'd give him drugs, are also saying they never would have done what Murray did, and that they actually refused," said Abrams, "I don't think there's a chance that [the jury] won't agree that he was grossly negligent."

Following White's testimony, the two sides will begin their summations and closing statements. The jury could begin deliberating early next week.

Propofol lollipops anyone?

Jedermanns Propofol Lutscher?

Posted: 09:28 PM ET

lolli-getty-final

Dr. Paul White testified that lollipops laced with propofol may be an effective way to sedate patients without having to give them an IV, because the anesthetic can be absorbed through the tissues in the mouth.

The anesthesiologist also gave his opinion on a study done by the prosecution's witness, Dr. Steven Shafer. That research was conducted in Chile where 6 humans drank propofol with no adverse reactions.

Dr. White agreed with Dr. Shafer saying that propofol can't be absorbed through the stomach, and that he never concluded Jackson died from drinking it. He just speculated that it could have contributed to his death.

Blood testing of one of the subjects from Dr. Shafer's study showed the presence of propofol. Dr. White said this could have been the due to absorption through the tissues in the subject's mouth.

Check out Dr. White doubting his own theory that Jackson drank propofol:

There was explosive testimony from defense witness Dr. Robert Waldman Thursday in the Michael Jackson death trial.

Waldman is an addiction specialist who testified Jackson was "dependent" and "possibly" addicted to Demerol - a pain killer so strong, it's often compared to morphine.

The defense used MJ's own medical records from his dermatologist Dr. Arnold Klein's office to try to prove his growing dependency.

Was Jackson's possible addiction to Demerol so strong that he would do anything to get his fix ... including self-medicating himself behind Dr. Conrad Murray's back?

Watch as Dr. Drew launches into a scathing rebuke of the use of Demerol on Michael Jackson. He goes head to head with the Dr. Klein's attorney, Garo Ghazarian.
