You short on cash or something? Even if I copy things to a hard drive, I usually like to hang onto the optical media since optical discs aren't susceptible to mechanical failure like hard drives (or failure resulting from a power outage, in the case of solid state drives).

I never encountered that kind of a fatal hard disk failure. And I still could burn them.
But to be honest, I think optical media are overrated. Flash drives and portable HDDs with a shitload of space are the future. And yes, I'm a little bit short on money.
I will also sell my old PS2 since I don't play with it anymore and yeah...
I want the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini. This is the future.

It depends a lot on brand, and also on random chance. High capacity flash drives and HDDs are great, but for truly long-term storage I have a small package of CD-Rs and DVD+Rs because they have no moving parts or memory wear.

I have a 120 GB SSD in my notebook, which is also my only computer I can use right now.
My one TB drive is a Toshiba. So yeah, your statistic helps quite a lot. ;)

Anyway, I trust my one TB drive enough to be my primary backup drive. I gave my old 160 GB Western Digital drive away to a friend in need. It's old but still works without any issues whatsoever.

As long as you're satisfied, that's fine. Myself, I just like the extra level of protection that optical media offers me for my most-difficult-to-recover data - both in terms of failure modes that it's immune or resistant to, and the simple fact that having duplicates is inherently safer than having only a single copy.

If that works for you, it's fine. I just don't like burned DVD's since I made bad experiences with them.
And I would need A LOT of them to backup my data. So yeah, I'm fine with my HDD. :vv:

Don't get me wrong, I don't do it for everything. I just have a not insignificant chunk of data that is either stuff that I created myself (hence, impossible to recover unless I have another copy) or is very hard to come by.

Well, the MLP episodes are somehow hard to come by since it does take forever to download them.
I'm on it since yesterday and now I reached only S2E9.
