I am, but only 30 hours a week, and paid hourly, not salaried.

Huh? Here in Germany you're always getting paid by the hour.

Oh? Well salaried means you get a fixed amount regardless of the exact number of hours you work... a lot of salaried workers end up working some amount of unpaid overtime as a result, but most of the good jobs are salaried so that's just something you have to deal with if you want a job that has superior pay and benefits. Only exception is union workers, but not many places are unionized.

My job right now is hourly and non-union, so if I go on vacation I just don't get paid for that period because I'm not working any hours.

It would be, but it would depend where I got a job. If I got one working for the state, I'd have 4 weeks paid vacation so I could easily do 2 weeks there. A lot of companies would only start me with 2 weeks, though... so if that were the case, I'd want to save a few of my vacation days to use later in the year.
