I think it is important to bear in mind the type of conversation you will have. I like conversations to entertain and inform - not
to prove I am better than my conversation partner.
I try to keep my speech simple and use only words you would normally use.
My opinion is, that if you try to impress your conversation partner with your superior intellect you will succeed only in making yourself sound a fool.
