Just sayin' modern phones can do way more stuff than the Pip-Boy that Fallout's creators first imagined in the 90's, so if you look at it that way, people already have Pip-Boys.

You can buy a protective case for a smartphone. A Pip-Boy just has the case built-in rather than being optional.
