Anyway... Lauren Faust originally planned to give Celestia the title of a Queen. But Hasbro intervened, saying that "Queen" would remind little girls of evil Queens.
So, she, Luna and the other two bear now the title of a Princess.
But I would have given them the title of an Empress instead. I mean, doesn't Empress Celestia sound WAY more epic? In a non-malevolent way?

Oh, and since Cadance and Shining rule over the Crystal EMPIRE, doesn't make this them Empress and Emperor by default?

Well, Celestia and Luna are very powerful beings. I just think that "Princess" doesn't suit them at all.
Such powerful beings deserve the title of an Empress and nothing less.

I do like the sound of Empress Celestia. As for Cadance and Shining... not necessarily. The House of Habsburg ruled the Austro-Hungarian Empire, but they weren't actually emperors anymore after the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire.

Well, that doesn't have much to do with the Equestrian Empire (doesn't that sound epic as well?), right? Celestia answers to nopony. Nopony is superior to her. By far. Celestia could do whatever the hell she wants.
She is the supreme, immortal leader of Equestria and when in doubt, the orders of the Solar Empress count.

Well I was talking about why Sombra and Cadance/Shining wouldn't necessarily have imperial titles.

And Celestia is far from being a bad ruler. She led her Empire through more than a thousand years to prosperity, freedom and peace.
