Stalin was a paranoid, insane bastard. As for the aircraft, they could've used a waterplane like the German Arado Ar 196 to get them outta there. After all, they captured some of these planes.
Just leave the swastika and all on it. In Germany we like to say: "Wo ein Wille ist, ist auch ein Weg".
It means if you really want to accomplish something, you will find a way to do it.
I'm not saying it would've been easy. Difficult, but not impossible.

I'm just saying that I can see waiting until they're sure it's going to work. The Polish guys were still doing valuable code-breaking work in France and Algeria, and if they failed an attempted rescue operation then the scientists' lives and work would be forfeit.

True, but wouldn't they have been safer in the UK? I'd say it would've been worth the risk.

I mean, they were absolutely safer in the UK. The Brits had very limited resources in continental Europe after France fell, though, so I think that there would've been a significant chance of failure if they tried anything that ballsy at that time.

A lot of everyone's big successes only happened because the Nazis were fucking stupid, anyhow, so it's easy to see "they should have done this" in hindsight, but at the time the other countries had no way of knowing the magnitude of the blunders that the Nazis were making. Like the Polish breakthrough on Enigma was based on the fact that the machine's keys were wired in fucking alphabetical order... the British army would have been screwed if it hadn't been for the colossal incompetence of Goering at Dunkirk. The list goes on.
