i practiced my english in some ways:

- in my schooltime i listened to myfavourite music,
stopped the tape or cd and wrote down what i heard

-reading english books. of course i started with easy books.
i think my first bookwas "dangerous minds". i knew the movie
already so it was really easy to understand

- watching dvds in english. at the beginning i sometimes needed
thesubtitles but after some time it becomes more easy

- surfing in the internet andtalk to the people there in english.
don't be afraid to say something wrong, evenenglish and american
people use their grammar always correctly.

I got in contact to american people in my area during my teenagertime so I improved myEnglish very easily that way, plus I started reading books and comics in English. I stillcan remember one of my first videos I have ever seen in English and this was Hellraiser,the problem was I almost did not understand what this was about, but that completelychanged and now I do enjoy watching dvd´s and am able to understand.

I believe movies to be a very effective way to learn English. Thanks to subtitles, there is always a way to check, if the dialogue has been understood correctly. It worked quite well for me.

Same here, although the subtitles and spoken words should match; it really increases the listening comprehension a lot and amazingly fast. :)
