What I meant was they won't stand up with their military against Russia. They would WRECK their shit. Both sides would fight to the death with nothing to gain.

Die russische Armee hätte schon längst den Boden mit den Ukrainern aufgewischt. In der Ukraine gab es mal Wehrpflicht, daher sind die Ukrainer bei den Rebellen auf jeden Fall militärisch ausgebildet und wohl auch in der Lage die Freiwilligen auszubilden.

You heavily overestimate Russia's power. The US has air superiority, naval supremacy, better technology, better intelligence, and a ton of veteran soldiers after 13 years of war - and to top it all off, we actually have allies, whereas I can't think of a single country that would be willing to directly side with Russia. Russia would get wrecked. The only thing saving them is their nuclear deterrent.

And their nuclear weapons are the reason why the US wouldn't dare to start a war with Russia. Air superiority and shit doesn't really matter if the war gets out of hand for them. What would stop them to use their nukes?

Die Chinesen haben kein Interesse daran, es sich mit den USA zu verscherzen, da sie ein viel zu wichtiger Handelspartner sind, auch bei den ganzen Differenzen. Für sie würde nichts bei rausspringen wenn sie sich auf die Seite Russlands schlagen.

Regardless, though, you were talking about Russia being "not some dinky Iraq" but the fact is that no army in the world can stand up to the US in non-nuclear warfare.

Yes, you're right on that one. But what if Putin decides to actually send in his troops to take over the Ukraine? What would Obama do then? Send the Army in? I doubt that. In the end Putin could do whatever the hell he wants. And I don't think Obama is stupid enough to risk a nuclear war with Russia, even if it is taking place only in the Ukraine.

I don't know what he'd do... but Putin wouldn't use nukes unless the war came to his own doorstep. Remember, the Cold War did include real fighting in proxy countries like Korea, Vietnam, and several Central/South American nations, and none of that started a nuclear exchange. Unless you think Putin is more insane than the Communist Party of the 1960s and 1970s, but that's not the impression I get.
