Where is the camera?http://www.snowcrest.net/camera/faq.php
The camera is located in a barn south west of the town of Mount Shasta.
How are these pictures made?
The camera is a Canon ES75 camcorder. Every 30 seconds a low resultion and high resolution image is captured on a FreeBSD unix system. The frames are capturing with an AVerMedia video card using Camserv. Every 20 frames (10 minutes) a movie is created using mpeg_encode. Every 10 minutes the current lowres, highres, and mpeg are sent to the snowcrest web server.
How are the temperature graphs made?
The graphs are made using the Multi Router Traffic Grapher (MRTG). This program was originally used to graph utilization of wide area network links, but it is flexible enough to handle mundane things such as temperature.
What is the source of your weather information?
The weather data is collected using a Radio Shack WX200 weather station using software available here.
Are the time stamps accurate?
Yes. The system clock on the snowcam machine is syncronized to world time using NTP. The system time is typically within 10 milliseconds of the reference server which is in turn syncronized with the NIST time servers.
Selvius' 1925 two-page article, "Decendants of Lemuria" is, according to Meisse, "the singlemost inportant document in the establishment of the modern Mt. Shasta-Lemurian myth," so we have included Selvius' full-text article. Selvius claims that Professor Edgar Lucian Larkin viewed the Lemurian site on Mount Shasta using his telescope: "Even no less a careful investigator and scientist than Prof. Edgar Lucin Larkin, for many years director of Mount Lowe Observatory, said in newspaper and magazine articles that he had seen, on many occasions, the great temple of this mystic village, while gazing through a long-distance telescope."Quelle: http://www.siskiyous.edu/shasta/fol/lem/index.htm (Archiv-Version vom 26.03.2010)
Although Selvius' article is the most historically interesting, Wishar Spenle Cerve's 1931 Lemuria: The Lost Continent of the Pacific is, according to Meisse, "responsible for the legend's widespread popularity" (1993; 146). Perhaps most intriging is Meisse's speculation that "it appears from the similarity of material that "Selvius" and "Cerve" were one and the same person" (1993; 145). Further muddying the waters is Edward Stul's worth claim that "Wishar Spenly Cerve" is really a letter-for-letter pseudonym for "Harve Spencer Lewis," first Imperator of the Rosicrucian Order of North and South America. Still, it is Cerve's book, published by the Ancient Mystical Order Rosae Crucis, that has provided the popular description of the Lemurians as "tall, graceful, and agile," and as visitors that "would come to one of the smaller towns and trade nuggets and gold dust for some modern commodities" (250).
The lore of some of the American Indians in the area held that Shasta is inhabited by the spirit chief Skell who descended from heaven to the mountain's summit.
Italian settlers arrived in the early 1900s to work in the mills and as stonemasons, establishing a strong Catholic presence in the area. Many other faiths have been attracted to Shasta over the years—more than any other Cascade volcano. Mount Shasta City and Dunsmuir, California, small towns near Shasta's western base, are focal points for many of these, which range from a Buddhist monastery (Shasta Abbey, founded by Houn Jiyu-Kennett in 1971) to modern-day Native American rituals. As reported in the documentary In The Light of Reverence, a group of Native Americans from the McCloud River area practice rituals on the mountain. Other surrounding tribes also continue to use the mountain for spiritual practices.[citation needed]
Guy Ballard's I Am Activity (started in the 1930s) and Elizabeth Clare Prophet's Church Universal and Triumphant (started in the 1950s) are probably the best-known among numerous groups to participate in Shasta's spiritual heritage. Some cults hold that races of sentient or spiritual beings generally considered to be Lemurians, superior to humans, live in or on Shasta, or visit the mountain.
In August 1987, believers in the spiritual significance of the Harmonic Convergence described Mount Shasta as one of a small number of global "power centers".[17] Mount Shasta remains a focus of "New Age" attention,[18] and a number of New Age-themed bookstores and meditation centers can be found in nearby towns.[19][20]
Mount Shasta City hosts 16 Christian churches. If the membership rolls were combined, they would account for approximately 25 percent of the population

Just south of the Oregon ? California border a majestic peak holds its secrets. Mt. Shasta, at 14,380 feet dominates the bright California sky, and as legend has it is home of the descendents of the Lost Continent of Lumura who live in an underground city. Locals along the trails and roads of this remote, serene area sometimes see strange robed ?elders?. One such encounter was described by Cyril H. Jones in the May 1990 UFO Universe.
As he and his wife were driving along the Everett Memorial highway out of the City of Mount Shasta towards the mysterious mountains they passed two tall, thin men with heavy backpacks on their backs walking up the steep road. For some unexplained reason Mr. Jones stopped his camper and let them catch up. Mr. Jones described the meeting:
?Two young men of well over six feet tall were peering in the window with gaunt faces and vibrant eyes of electric blue! My wife and I must have had a strange expression on our faces because we were fascinated by the unusual color of their eyes. Politely, one of the men stepped forward and asked, with an unidentifiable accent, if we had stopped for them.? The two men asked to be dropped at the timberline. Then climbed in the back of his camper.
As they disappeared into the forest the Jones? noticed the pair were wearing simple leather sandals, unusual footwear for the area.
The next morning after climbing to the 11,500-foot level the Jones? pitched their tent. By the time their camp was squared away a cloud had started to shroud the mountain blocking the sun. Within minutes ?(it) had gone from balmy and nice to zero visibility with a twenty-five mile wind.? As the day continued the weather went from bad to worst. Thunder, lightning and driving snow. Mr. Jones described what happened next:
?Then at about three in the morning, at the very height of the tempest, we heard the impossible; foot steps crunching through the snow outside our tent ? with wide eyes my wife confirmed it sounded like someone ? or some thing ? was slowly walking around the tent, stopping from time-to-time, and the continuing on.?
The next morning the storm was over. The Jones? made a careful examination of the area around their campsite, but they found nothing.
Had the Jones? nocturnal visitor been one of the elusive animals known as Big Foot? Or had the two strange men of the day before braved the storm to look over the Jones?, repaying the favor of the ride up the mountain by becoming their guardian angels during the raging storm? Had the Jones? met two ?elders? from Lemuria? We?ll never know. But one thing we do know. The Jones? are certain ? during the night their camp above the tree line on the mysterious Mt. Shasta had been visited by someone ? or something.
