LOS ANGELES (AP) — An AEG Live LLC executive who negotiated with Michael Jackson's doctor says he never considered doing a background check on the singer's physician.

Paul Gongaware told a jury he didn't think that financial issues would affect a doctor's medical judgment.

The producer and promoter is testifying in a case filed by Jackson's mother, who claims the company failed to properly investigate Conrad Murray before allowing him to work with the singer during preparations for comeback concerts.

AEG denies wrongdoing and contends it could not have known that Murray was giving Jackson doses of the anesthetic propofol as a sleep aid. Jackson died from an overdose of it in June 2009.

Murray had liens and was facing foreclosure before agreeing to work with Jackson for $150,000 a month.

Michael Jackson wanted Conrad Murray as tour doctor, AEG exec says

The AEG executive in charge of Michael Jackson's London concerts testified Monday that he had never heard of Conrad Murray — the doctor who gave the singer a fatal dose of the anesthetic propofol — until Jackson told him he wanted the physician to accompany him on his comeback tour in England.

“He came up to me and said he wanted to take Dr. Murray to London as his personal physician,” Paul Gongaware testified in the Jackson family's wrongful-death suit against Anschutz Entertainment Group, the tour promoter and producer.

When Gongaware suggested during the late April 2009 conversation it would be easier and cheaper to use an English doctor, Jackson vetoed the idea.

Gongaware said Jackson told him, "'This is the machine. We have to take care of the machine.' I think what he meant was his brain could create it but his body had to deliver the show every night.”

Shortly after, Gongaware testified, he called Murray to tell him Jackson wanted to take him to London.

Murray, he said, didn't ask any questions, and they immediately started talking about the price.

“I asked him what he wanted." Gongaware testified. "He said he’d need $5 million."

Murray told Gongaware that he'd have to shut down his clinics in Houston, Las Vegas and San Diego and lay people off.

Asked by AEG attorney Marvin Putnam if Murray's price was reasonable, Gongaware replied, “It was ridiculous… Michael couldn’t afford it, so I had to tell him it wasn’t going to work.”

Murray eventually agreed to work for $150,000 a month.

Jackson's mother and three children are suing AEG, Gongaware and AEG executive Randy Phillips, saying they negligently hired and supervised Murray. AEG says Jackson hired the doctor and that any money the company was supposed to pay him was an advance to the singer.

Murray was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and is now serving a jail sentence.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — An AEG Live LLC executive who negotiated with Michael Jackson's doctor told a jury Monday that he never considered conducting a background check on the singer's physician.

Promoter and producer Paul Gongaware testified that he didn't think it was necessary to conduct background checks on anyone working closely with Jackson. He said in Conrad Murray's case, he wasn't concerned about his background because he'd been recommended by the entertainer.

The former physician had several liens, child support judgments and was facing foreclosure before agreeing to work with Jackson.

"I just expect doctors to be ethical," Gongaware said. "Their financial side of their life shouldn't affect their medical judgment."

Gongaware is testifying in a negligent hiring lawsuit filed by Jackson's mother against AEG Live, contending that the company failed to properly investigate Murray before allowing him to work with her son on preparations for the "This Is It" shows.

AEG denies it hired Murray, or could have known that Murray was giving Jackson doses of the anesthetic propofol as a sleep aid. Jackson died from a propofol overdose in June 2009, and Murray was convicted of involuntary manslaughter.

Defense attorney Marvin S. Putnam has said hiring Murray was Jackson's personal choice.

Jackson died before signing Murray's $150,000 per month contract to work on the tour. Murray was never paid by AEG for his work with the singer.

Katherine Jackson's attorney Brian Panish, who has said Murray was facing nearly $1 million in debts, said in opening statements that the doctor's financial problems created a conflict of interest in his treatments of Jackson.

Gongaware reiterated earlier testimony that he wasn't concerned about Jackson's health.

The executive worked on an earlier Jackson tour, "Dangerous," that had to be halted due to the singer's prescription drug abuse. He said he saw no signs in 2009 that Jackson was abusing prescription medications.

Gongaware said he recommended that Jackson hire a London-based doctor for the concerts, but the singer didn't seem to give it serious consideration.

"It wasn't my place to say who his doctor was going to be," Gongaware said. "It was his decision."

He also said he never considered performing background checks on Jackson's makeup artist, a choreographer who worked one-on-one with the singer or Kenny Ortega, the tour's director.

"I didn't see the need for it," he said.

Gongaware was shown emails he was sent less than a month before Jackson's death in which tabloid newspapers were speculating the singer was suffering from cancer.

Gongaware urged his company not to respond. "Our redemption will be when he does his shows," he wrote about Jackson. "We don't have to sell tickets, so we can just sit back and prove them wrong by just doing it."

The trial is entering its sixth week. AEG Live CEO Randy Phillips is expected to testify later this week.

Also für mich ist dieser Prozess eine sinnlose Zeitverschwendung, auch wenn wir ein paar Sachen erfahren haben oder erfahren werden, es kann niemand verantwortlich gemacht werden für das, was passiert ist.
Für mich ist es nur unentschuldbar, daß Michael einen persönlichen Arzt hatte, der nur für ihn da zu sein hatte und in dessen Obhut er gestorben ist. Punkt. Der Michael ist praktisch vor dessen Augen zum Skelett abgemagert, obwohl der Arzt ihn täglich gesehen hat, das ist für mich unverständlich und kann nicht sein. Das passt nicht!!!
Alles andere, was die da jetzt vor Gericht in jeder Aussage sehen wollen ist Bullshit.
Der Murray muß her und der Tohme oder Thome und der Klein, alle anderen sind für mich außen vor!

ich halte auch nicht viel von diesem Prozess ... einer schiebt die "Schuld" auf den anderen ... es werden bestimmt auch nur Bruchteile bekannt .... wobei ich auch deine Meinung vertrete, "Schuld" haben sie alle, einschließlich Michael Jackson ... leider war er teilweise unfähig Entscheidungen zu treffen und hätte die Hilfe seines persönlichen Arztes gebraucht ... der hat ihm nur "Hilfe" geboten, die ihn zerstört hat ... man sagt, dass MJ seit Jahren fast nur Ja-Sager um sich hatte, andere hat er leider sehr schnell aus seinem Blickfeld "verbannt" ...

Neben über 70 Fotografien zeigt die Ausstellung auch private Memorabilien des unumschränkten „King of Pop“. Die Schau ist weltweit die erste ihrer Art.

Michael Jackson ist ein Phänomen. Auch rund vier Jahre nach seinem Tod. Der „King of Pop’“ ist nicht nur – laut Guinness-Buch der Rekorde – „der erfolgreichste Entertainer aller Zeiten“. Er hält durch seine faszinierende Aura, seinen bizarren Lebenswandel und durch seine komplexe Persönlichkeit auch posthum die Pop-Welt in Atem.

Aktueller Beleg: Die am 6. Juni im Infozentrum Kump in Hallenberg beginnende und bis zum 12. Juli dauernde Ausstellung „Michael Jackson – Welcome To My World“. Die weltweit erste museale Fotoausstellung über den Pop-König hält über 70 teilweise rare und erstmals gezeigte Fotografien und viele Memorabilien aus seinem privaten Fundus bereit. Eine Ausstellung, die fasziniert und hilft, das Geheimnis „Michael Jackson“ zum Teil zu entschlüsseln.

Erste museale Fotoausstellung

Die 70 Fotografien von Weltklasse-Fotokünstlern zeichnen ein vielfältiges, bisweilen widersprüchliches Bild des Musikers und Entertainers. Sie zeigen den oft als weltfremdes Genie bezeichneten Star als fröhlichen, lockeren und umgänglichen Menschen – aber auch als entrückten, introvertierten Sonderling. Viele der gezeigten Motive werden der Öffentlichkeit erstmals gezeigt. Darunter Werke von Jonathan Exley, ein Fotograf, der das Vertrauen von Jackson genoss; und von Arno Bani, der ihn für die Plattenfirma Sony Music vielfach vor die Linse bekam.

Neben diesen autorisierten Fotografien hält „Michael Jackson – Welcome To My World“ auch Schnappschüsse und Glückstreffer von Edel-Paparazzi wie Ron Gallela und Kevin Mazur bereit.

Sie bilden den Moonwalk-Erfinder als öffentlichkeitsscheuen Megastar ab, der als Freund von Kolleginnen wie Britney Spears, Madonna und Hollywood-Ikone Liz Taylor allerdings aufblüht. Memorabilien aus seinem Nachlass runden das hier ausgestellte Bild der Musiklegende ab.

Die Fotos wurden von Peter Reichelt aus Mannheim zur Verfügung gestellt. „Seit Jahren habe ich verschiedene Fotografen kontaktiert, um diese Ausstellung zusammen zu stellen. Besonders an den Fotos von Jonathan Exley war ich interessiert. Immerhin hat er Michael Jackson 15 Jahre lang begleitet. Leider gab es immer nur Absagen – bis zum Dezember vergangenen Jahres. So ist es uns gelungen ein umfassendes Bild von Michael Jackson zu entwerfen. Vier CDs, drei Welttourneen, von 1987 bis zu seinem plötzlichen Tod, die Schau bietet einen Überblick über den Menschen und Künstler Michael Jackson.“

Bürgermeister Michael Kronauge: „Durch die Zusammenarbeit mit der Sparkasse Hochsauerland ist es uns gelungen diese einmalige Fotoausstellung nach Hallenberg zu holen. Eine ehemalige Fan-Club-Leiterin von Michael Jackson hat uns außerdem ihre private Sammlung u.a. Goldene Schallplatten, Awards, Autogramme, Eintrittskarten, Briefpapier von der Neverland-Ranch und vieles mehr zur Verfügung gestellt.“

Begleitet wird die Ausstellungseröffnung vom Jugendblasorchester Hallenberg „JBO plays Michael Jackson“.

ich bin jetzt auch fast der Meinung, Michael wollte es so, wie es da abgelaufen ist, wahrscheinlich war dem eh alles egal, er wollte nur sein Propofol, ansonsten konnten alle erzählen, was sie wollten. Ich glaube, es wäre nie zu den Konzerten gekommen, selbst wenn er da am 25.6. nicht gestorben wäre. Aber der Murray ist auf jeden Fall zu Recht im Knast, leider viel zu kurz.
