"Four framed photos of a couple visibly in love were probably among the Valentine’s gifts Reeva Steenkamp gave her boyfriend, international sport star Oscar Pistorius, the evening before he allegedly shot and killed her.
A shop assistant at a party shop close to the Silver Woods Country Estate, where Pistorius resides, yesterday told Rekord that Steenkamp visited the shop last Wednesday, requesting special wrapping paper.
According to the shop assistant, Nellie Mokgabuda, she did not know who Steenkamp was when she walked through the doors. “She could have been any young woman busy with her late afternoon shopping, yet, I was struck by her beauty as she walked in with her loose blond hair and blue jeans.”
Mokgabuda said Steenkamp brought in four photos and frames, which she wanted to be wrapped in Valentine’s paper. “I recognised Oscar in the photos, all of which pictured the athlete and the model in loving poses. From the photos it was clear that these two people were a couple in love,” she said.
Steenkamp was, according to Mokgabuda, excited about the gift. “I asked her if Oscar was her boyfriend and she proudly said ‘yes’ while smiling and looking happy.”
Oscar was crazy about Valentine’s Day, Steenkamp told Mokgabuda, adding that she believed the framed photos would make the ideal Valentine’s gift for her boyfriend.
“I gathered that she had just had the photos printed before she came to the shop. I didn’t have any Valentine wrapping paper in stock but suggested an alternative.” Steenkamp helped Mokgabuda to wrap the gift.
“She did not appear to be anxious in any way, on the contrary she looked relaxed and excited. When she walked out of the shop she stopped, turned around and wished me a good day.”
Mokgabuda only learnt about Steenkamp’s alleged murder, which according to the state was premeditated, on Friday. “I couldn’t believe my ears. It seemed unreal. She looked so lively and in love.”
Mokgabuda’s recollection of Steenkamp happily wrapping her boyfriend’s Valentine’s gift comes amidst speculation in the media that jealousy might have sparked a fight that allegedly led to the fatal shooting of Steenkamp. However unconfirmed, it is rumoured that Steenkamp had befriended a well-known Pretoria sportsman"
