In his account to the bail hearing, Pistorius said he shot at the door without his legs on, then put them on before using the cricket bat to try and break the door down to get to Steenkamp.

The state originally claimed that he had his prostheses on when he shot at the door, indicating premeditation, but it has been leaked that its own ballistics evidence has subsequently found that this was not the case.

We've heard from neighbours of two sets of bangs that they believed were gunshots - and a woman's screams before, between and up until the second set. The defence say the first set of bangs was Pistorius shooting at the door thinking there was an intruder behind it, the screams were him realising that he had shot Steenkamp, and the second set of bangs were him beating down the door.

The prosecution have indicated that it will be their case that the second set of bangs were the gunshots but they haven't yet explained what they think the first set of bangs were.

Lt Col Vermeulen said today that Pistorius would have been on his stumps when he hit the door with the cricket bat because of the height of the marks.

If the prosecution are sticking to their claim that Pistorius was on his legs when he fired at the door - something that's far from certain right now - does this mean they will say that Pistorius tried to get to Steenkamp by breaking down the door with the cricket bat before shooting at it? If so, how did he eventually get the door open? And what on earth caused the damage to the metal plate on the bath?
